Now and then

From Patient to Fourth Grade Teacher

How Hallie stopped trying to outrun her thoughts and built a life her teenage self would be proud of.

From Child Mind Institute Patient to Fourth Grade Teacher
Hallie’s Story

Hallie’s Story

Ever since Hallie was a kid, she’s struggled with anxiety.

Generalized anxiety disorder could feel like a playlist stuck on repeat, looping in the background of everything she tried to do — at school, at home, with friends, and when Hallie was alone. As a kid, she just wanted to turn the volume down on those racing, restless thoughts.

“Sometimes, it felt like the anxious thoughts were the only thing I could hear.”

– Hallie, Child Mind Institute Patient

Making a Change

Making a Change

Hallie and her parents found the Child Mind Institute in 2014, when she was in high school. With a team of adults to support her, she learned the coping skills to not just lower the volume — but to change the song altogether.

Through meditation, Hallie started to acknowledge her thoughts, rather than trying to outrun them. With cognitive behavioral therapy, she could identify the loops she’d get stuck in — and then redirect them.

Fast Forward

Fast Forward

It’s been ten years since Hallie first sought treatment at the Child Mind Institute. And today, Hallie’s teenage self would be so proud of her and the life she’s built.

She loves nature, hiking, and her new home state of Colorado. In 2024, she got married, surrounded by the people she loves. And she celebrated the start of her fifth year as an elementary school teacher — a job where every day, she gets to be the adult she needed when she was a kid.

“My life has definitely been changed for the better.”

Finding Her Voice & Looking Forward

Finding Her Voice & Looking Forward

Mental health is a lifelong journey, and it isn’t always linear. But today, Hallie is both a survivor and an advocate. Recently, she partnered with the Child Mind Institute on a campaign to support children and families facing the same struggles she did.

“I see it every day in my fourth-grade classroom,” says Hallie. “Our kids today face so many challenges, but they have so much power and strength already within them.”

About Your Donation

About the Child Mind Institute

Millions of children – as many as 1 in 5 – struggle with mental health or learning challenges. Fully 70% of U.S. counties do not have a single child and adolescent psychiatrist. Due to stigma, misinformation, and a lack of access to care, the average time between onset of symptoms and any treatment at all is over 8 years. Our children deserve better.

That’s why the Child Mind Institute was created.

We’re dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders by giving them the help they need. We’ve become the leading independent nonprofit in children’s mental health by providing gold-standard evidence-based care, delivering educational resources to millions of families each year, training educators in underserved communities, and developing tomorrow’s breakthrough treatments.

Together, we truly can transform children’s lives.
