Advances and Challenges in Understanding Tics, Tourette's Disorder and Related Problems
Barbara J. Coffey, MD, MS, is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She has held the position of Chief of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry since October 1, 2017 and Director of the University of Miami Tourette Association of America (TAA) Center of Excellence since July 1, 2019.
About This Event
Tic disorders, including Tourette’s disorder, and related problems such as OCD and ADHD, are highly prevalent in pediatric psychiatric practice. Understanding compelling tic-related clinical issues, such as prevalence and presentation in females, risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and how to evaluate and disentangle complex cross-diagnostic symptoms, remains challenging. The event will explore new data on these important clinical questions and recommended approaches for how to address them in treatment.
Learning Objectives
- Define diagnostic criteria, prevalence, and course of tic disorders and Tourette’s disorder
- Identify the spectrum of psychiatric disorders and related problems which frequently co-occur with Tourette’s disorder
- Consider fundamental basic and clinical science questions and their relationship to the evidence base on tics, Tourette’s disorder, and related problems and apply them to clinical practice
