Setting the Stage: The Next Frontier of Mental Health Research Depends on Ecological Data

About This Event
Our kids are not okay — and while we may not know precise causes, the pervasiveness of technology and social media is likely playing a role. Policymakers and technology companies are looking at solutions to mitigate harms to youth from their engagement with social media. As clinicians and researchers, we have a role to play in helping to understand which interventions are having a positive effect, and how best to direct those interventions for the highest impact.
In the first session of our Technology & Youth Mental Health Series, our hope is to give a sense of where the data and technology infrastructure is heading and what data will be needed to understand if the policy changes and technology interventions being applied are working. At Child Mind Institute, our strong hypothesis is that we need more ecological data — data that goes beyond surveys and laboratories to instead represent actual interaction between the person and the technology in their daily life.
About the Technology & Youth Mental Health Series
The Child Mind Institute’s Technology & Youth Mental Health Series has convened a panel of experienced researchers, advocates, and tech thinkers to explore the interplay between technology, youth mental health, and public policy with the goal of identifying challenges in advancing ecological research and scoping out possible solutions. All events are open to the public. All lectures will be hosted virtually over Zoom.
