Anger, frustration, anxiety, shame: One thing kids of all ages have in common is difficulty handling big, uncomfortable emotions. In younger kids the result is tantrums and outbursts. Teenagers lash out, too, but trouble managing emotions can also result in self-destructive behaviors, including self-injury and suicidality.

This week on childmind.org we’re rounding up resources for helping kids cope with uncomfortable emotions. With support, they can learn to express themselves in ways that get their needs met, not get them into trouble. Our experts pass along strategies for managing tantrums, helping kids calm down and boosting self-control. And for children who struggle with severe emotional instability, there is a very effective treatment called DBT.
