Improving Mental Health Care for Children Across Greece

Stavros Niarchos CMI Logos

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and the Child Mind Institute are launching an ambitious five-year project to transform children’s mental health training, workforce planning and access to care in Greece. SNF’s deep experience building public-private partnerships brings the Child Mind Institute’s field-leading expertise together with local partners to develop a comprehensive care and referral system that will impact families across the country.

This project is the Child Mind Institute’s first significant effort to transform children’s lives outside of the United States, and the first step in a journey with global potential for good.

About the Child Mind Institute/SNF Partnership

The Child Mind Institute’s work with SNF is a bold investment in Greece’s child mental health infrastructure. The initiative focuses on three main areas:

Clinicians in Training

Training Children’s Mental Health Professionals

Leveraging 12 years of clinical training experience at the Child Mind Institute, the partnership with SNF will establish a standardized protocol in Greece and beyond. Better equipping professionals to identify and prevent behavioral health issues will give families in need access to dependable treatment that works. Ongoing clinical supervision and a “train the trainer” model will create a culture of evidence-based practice. And the protocol, once proven in Greece, can be adapted and deployed across the region.

Developing a National Referral Center

A centralized referral center will improve care options for families struggling with the most severe mental health challenges. Matching children in need of care with a limited number of specialist providers is a workforce problem that transcends borders. The Child Mind Institute has worked to find innovative solutions in the US, and the partnership with SNF will bring these solutions to Greece by developing networks of consultation and case co-work with hospitals and mental health providers throughout the country.

Geography of Greek Islands

Expanding Telehealth Services and Online Tools

The unique geography of Greece — including hundreds of inhabited islands — presents a distinct barrier to timely access to mental health care. Tele-mental health has the potential to deliver life-changing interventions to children and families who are isolated in any number of ways — including by stigma, language, socioeconomic status, and geography. Together the Child Mind Institute and SNF will build out technological capacity for tele-mental health provision and specialized online tools for both families and clinicians. As a result, the program will revolutionize children’s access to the care they need.

“Every child deserves access to professional, compassionate and dignified health care — including for mental health — and this program represents a significant first step toward a new paradigm for children’s mental health in Greece.”

– SNF Co-President Andreas Dracopoulos

“Together we can create an international model for mental health care that will change the trajectory for children and adolescents struggling with their mental health in Greece and beyond.”

– Child Mind Institute President Harold S. Koplewicz, MD
