Integrating Developmental and Neuroscience Research in the Treatment of Disruptive Behavior Disorders: The Role of Self-Regulation
Paulo Graziano, PhD, is a professor of psychology and the director of the S.E.L.F.-Regulation Laboratory at the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University. Dr. Graziano’s research program strives to integrate theory and methods from developmental psychology and neuroscience to examine the development of children’s self-regulation skills and how such processes can be applied to the understanding and treatment of disruptive behavior disorders such as ADHD.
About This Event
It has been over 25 years since scholars began examining the comorbidity and underlying mechanisms of ADHD. This talk will focus on the newest and most exciting direction related to such mechanisms with a focus on emotion dysregulation. Dr. Graziano will not only provide an overview of his developmental psychopathology work related to emotion dysregulation, but most importantly how this work has informed the development of early intervention programs.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize emotion dysregulation as a core feature of children with disruptive behavior disorders (e. g., ADHD) and an important focus of early intervention.
- Identify which components of a multimodal psychosocial intervention are necessary to address the impairment of children with disruptive behavior disorders.
- Differentiate which neuroimaging measures are useful towards understanding the heterogeneity and/or comorbidity of ADHD.
About the Visiting Professor Lecture Series
The Child Mind Institute Visiting Professor Lecture Series invites leaders in the field of child and adolescent mental health to talk about the latest research and treatment protocols. All events are open to the public. This year, all lectures will be hosted in-person and virtually over Zoom. In partnership with Northwell Health, continuing medical education (CME) credits for psychiatrists and continuing education (CE) credits for psychologists are available to registered course participants.
