Student Art Project
We are grateful for the generous support of the Doris and Melvin Sirow Art Fund, which makes the Child Mind Institute Student Art Project possible. The arts are critical to child development and academic success. Art promotes self-esteem and provides opportunities for self-expression.
The Child Mind Institute Student Art Project was launched to provide an opportunity for schools in the New York metropolitan area to have their students’ art work exhibited at the Child Mind Institute. We invite schools to prepare an exhibition for our gallery based on a theme chosen by one of their own art teachers. Student pieces are displayed prominently and each exhibition launches with an opening reception for student artists, their families, and the entire school community, hosted by the Child Mind Institute.
The Child Mind Institute Student Art Project is made possible through support from the Doris and Melvin Sirow Art Fund. This fund was established to honor the legacy of Doris and Melvin Sirow by ensuring that the Student Art Program can continue to give local school children the opportunity to display their artwork and create a warm and inviting environment for patients and their families.
The arts are critical to child development, academic success, and promoting self-esteem and self-expression. And research has proven that integrating the arts into healthcare settings creates a healing environment, supports the physical, mental, and emotional health of patients, and reduces stress and anxiety.
About the Student Art Project
The Child Mind Institute invites public and independent schools to participate in our Student Art Project, a gallery program dedicated to displaying works of art created by student artists.
Our non-juried gallery program presents 26-34 student works of art to be displayed in designated gallery space on the second floor of the Child Mind Institute. Our resident curator, Angela Gage, works directly with schools to facilitate all aspects of the exhibition process—from providing permission slips to framing and mounting artwork to printing exhibition invitations.
Student work exhibited in our gallery program is also available for public viewing online in the virtual gallery on our website. The virtual gallery goes up when the exhibition opens and remains online after the exhibit closes. Exhibiting schools also have the opportunity to link their website to their online gallery.
The Student Art Project is also a way to enhance our partnership with schools and parents. In addition to the exhibition, we provide a free workshop for parents around a topic of interest related to parenting and children’s mental health. We also organize a breakfast or lunch at the Child Mind Institute with our clinicians and the school staff so they can learn more about the important work that each group is doing.
Call for Submissions
We invite you to learn more about opportunities for your school to participate in our Student Art Project and consider submitting works for a future exhibition. For more information and submission guidelines, contact Angela Gage, the Child Mind Institute Student Art Project Curator at 212.308.3118 or angela.gage@childmind.org.
The Child Mind Institute Student Art Project is an expression of our commitment to community outreach. We want all kids to feel welcome in our home—and have the chance to share their talents with others.
About the Art at the Child Mind Institute
The Child Mind Institute’s headquarters also hosts a wonderful private collection on loan, including contemporary and modern works by Lillian Bassman, Richmond Burton, Thomas Demand, Ellsworth Kelly, Ryan McGinness, James Nares, Linda Sirow, Kiki Smith, and Tam Van Tran.
We believe that our surroundings matter. Our headquarters were designed to be child- and family-friendly, with public spaces that are bright and spacious and play areas that are interesting and engaging. The art on our walls is part of that experience. We want the children and families who visit us to be comfortable—and we also want them to be inspired.
Thanks to the generosity of friends of the Child Mind Institute, pieces by a number of important contemporary artists are juxtaposed with the fantastic rotating gallery of works by student artists.
