Child Mind Institute 2016 Spring Luncheon

While adolescent brains are primed for high, complex levels of learning, they are not as developed as adult brains and less able to self-regulate. As prominent neuroscientist Dr. Frances Jensen puts it, the teenage brain is like a “puzzle awaiting completion.” Understanding the adolescent brain can help explain the actions, attitudes and often roller coaster-like emotional lives of teenagers. Join us for this panel discussion to learn more as well as how to respond to the challenges and mental health concerns that often arise during adolescence. The topic is relevant for parents of current teens, parents of soon-to-be teens, or anyone who wants insight into what was going on during their own teenage years!

Frances E. Jensen, MD, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Jensen has researched brain development from the neonatal period through adulthood. She was Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, Director of Translational Neuroscience and Director of Epilepsy Research at Boston Children’s Hospital, and Senior Neurologist at Boston Children’s and Brigham and Women’s Hospitals. She lectures widely about the teen brain at science museums, TEDMED, and high schools.

Harold S. Koplewicz, MD, is the founding president of the Child Mind Institute. One of the nation’s leading child and adolescent psychiatrists, he is known as an innovator in the field, a strong advocate for child mental health and a master clinician. Dr. Koplewicz has been repeatedly recognized in America’s Top Doctors, Best Doctors in America and New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors in New York,” and was named one of WebMD’s 2014 Health Heroes for his activism on behalf of children with psychiatric or learning disorders. He is currently the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology.
