Third grade girls created watercolor paintings of the sky at their favorite time of day, drawing from their own imagination for inspiration. For technique they studied artists who painted skies and observed how watercolors can be used to describe the drama and depth of the sky. The paintings they produced became the backdrop for the second part of the project, which focused on contour lines. The girls looked at images of the New York City skyline and noticed the features that make the city unique, including the different shapes and sizes of buildings that make up the city. Using photographs and paintings of New York for inspiration, the girls sketched their own interpretation of the skyline. Finally, they incorporated their skylines into their watercolor skies using black tempera paint and oil pastels.

Child Mind Institute Student Art Project

Four times a year the Child Mind Institute invites public and independent schools to participate in our Student Art Project, a gallery program dedicated to displaying works of art created by student artists.

We invite schools to prepare an exhibition for our gallery based on a theme chosen by one of their own art teachers. Student pieces are displayed prominently in the gallery created by our resident curator, Angela Gage. We then invite student artists, their families, and the entire school community to join us for an opening reception to launch the school’s Student Art Project.

The Child Mind Institute Student Art Project is an expression of our commitment to community outreach. We want all kids to feel welcome in our home—and have the chance to share their talents with others.
