Sophie’s Journey from OCD Treatment to a Master’s in Counseling

Meet a former Child Mind Institute patient who’s now a mental health care professional caring for her own patients.

Meet Sophie

Meet Sophie

When Sophie was about eight years old, she came to the Child Mind Institute for treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

As a kid, she’d become debilitated by certain words and sounds. She’d erase her schoolwork until it tore holes in the paper. She’d spend hours in the shower and wash her hands until they bled.

A Home Away From Home

A Home Away From Home

Sophie describes the Child Mind Institute as becoming like a home away from home during her preteen years all the way through college. It’s where she had some of her darkest moments, but also her greatest triumphs. With the help of her team of clinicians, she learned to feel safe again.

“The Child Mind Institute’s patience and diligence were instrumental in helping me find a place of stability.”

A Safe Space

A Safe Space

As Sophie grew older and her needs evolved, the Child Mind Institute grew with her. When she suffered a personal loss in her senior year of college, her clinician walked with her through the grieving process.

“Week after week I felt like a broken record,” says Sophie, “but she always encouraged me to use our time and space for however I needed it.”

A Full Circle Moment

A Full Circle Moment

Last year, Sophie graduated with a master’s in mental health counseling, and she has now been seeing her own patients for over a year. Her goal is to use her unique perspective to help children like her younger self feel less alone.

“For a long time, I was convinced that those who struggle with their own demons couldn’t possibly be equipped to help others,” Sophie says. “It finally dawned on me … No matter what you go through or how you struggle, you’re not defined by your past.”

“If I could be what the clinicians at the Child Mind Institute have been for me for even one client, then I’ve achieved beyond my wildest dreams.”

About Your Donation

About the Child Mind Institute

Millions of children – as many as 1 in 5 – struggle with mental health or learning challenges. Fully 70% of U.S. counties do not have a single child and adolescent psychiatrist. Due to stigma, misinformation, and a lack of access to care, the average time between onset of symptoms and any treatment at all is over 8 years. Our children deserve better.

That’s why the Child Mind Institute was created.

We’re dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders by giving them the help they need. We’ve become the leading independent nonprofit in children’s mental health by providing gold-standard evidence-based care, delivering educational resources to millions of families each year, training educators in underserved communities, and developing tomorrow’s breakthrough treatments.

Together, we truly can transform children’s lives.
