Support Children's Mental Health

Your donation ensures that all families receive the mental health support they need.

On the Frontlines

Children, on average, spend roughly 1,000 hours in school per year. As some of the most present figures in kids’ lives, teachers play many roles that go far beyond academics. Not only do they support children’s social-emotional learning, but they also tend to be among the first to notice when a child is struggling. Teachers everywhere need adequate tools and resources so they can support children in the most helpful and effective way possible.

What It Means to Be a Teacher

Answers from real teachers in California

“It’s more than just the classroom. I might not have kids of my own but I’m looking after 120 of them 8 hours a day. We are there to create the safe haven where they’re comfortable and they’re able to talk to us.”

“A lot of people think that teachers are just in there to deliver the curriculum. We end up spending so much time with them, a lot of times we see things that other people might not…It’s so important for them to be able to have self-awareness when it comes to their emotions. And to have it in a way that is nonjudgmental, where there’s no shame attached to it.”

“Being a teacher is more than just teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic. Teachers now are counselors, disciplinarians, administrators, they’re everything…and kids nowadays have a lot more to deal with. You see them struggling, and you’ve pulled out all the tools in your belt to help them. To see the limitations of everything that we can do is the challenging part…There need to be more tools and resources for teachers to be able to use as well as students.”

A Toolkit of Support

The California Healthy Minds, Thriving Kids Project

A Toolkit of Support

The Child Mind Institute offers professional training and online resources designed to support and empower educators as they care for our children. The California Healthy Minds, Thriving Kids Project is a series of free, evidence-based bilingual print and video resources that help teachers and kids learn five critical sets of skills:

  • Understanding Feelings
  • Relaxation Skills
  • Understanding Thoughts
  • Managing Intense Emotions
  • Mindfulness

Feedback from Educators

In a follow-up study conducted by Lake Research Partners surveying California educators’ response to the project:

84%
of educators reported that their students found the videos interesting to watch
86%
of educators gave the videos and skill sheets positive marks for quality and content
82%
of educators reported that they are likely to use the materials

“The goal is to orient teachers to understanding of kinds of stresses they’ve been under, and to give them a set of skills that they can easily turn around and apply with their students. Not only to improve overall wellness, but to make it so they’re more ready to learn.”

– Dave Anderson, PhD, Vice President of School and Community Programs

About Your Donation

About the Child Mind Institute

Millions of children – as many as 1 in 5 – struggle with mental health or learning challenges. Fully 70% of U.S. counties do not have a single child and adolescent psychiatrist. Due to stigma, misinformation, and a lack of access to care, the average time between onset of symptoms and any treatment at all is over 8 years. Our children deserve better.

That’s why the Child Mind Institute was created.

We’re dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders by giving them the help they need. We’ve become the leading independent nonprofit in children’s mental health by providing gold-standard evidence-based care, delivering educational resources to millions of families each year, training educators in underserved communities, and developing tomorrow’s breakthrough treatments.

Together, we truly can transform children’s lives.
