Charles Laidi, MD, PhD
Charles Laidi, MD, PhD, is postdoctoral fellow at the Center for the Developing Brain at the Child Mind Institute. His research focuses on the link between cerebral circuits (basal ganglia, cerebellum) and symptoms of mental health disorders. Dr. Laidi is investigating how brain circuits might be altered in mental health disorders using structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in large databases, in order to identify brain-based biomarkers.
After an initial training at the Sorbonne University School of Medicine (Paris, France), Dr. Laidi completed his residency in both adult and child psychiatry in Paris. He obtained a doctoral degree in Neuroscience at the French Institute for Biomedical Research (INSERM) and at Neurospin Neuroimaging Research Center. Dr. Laidi studied how the cerebellum is involved in schizophrenia, autism and bipolar disorder. This region of the brain represents only 20% of the brain volume but contains more than 50% of its neurons.
Charles Laidi received financial support from the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation and INSERM to become an Assistant Professor at Paris University Hospitals. He was in charge of an inpatient unit and developed a non-invasive brain stimulation platform at Henri Mondor University Hospitals. Dr. Laidi also received funding from the French Ministry for research to conduct a multicentric non-invasive brain stimulation clinical trial in patients struggling with schizophrenia. The aim of this clinical trial is to combine transcranial direct current stimulation of the cerebellum and neuroimaging to alleviate negative symptoms of schizophrenia.
