Gerard A. Gioia, PhD
Gerard A. Gioia, PhD, is the founder and former chief of the Division of Pediatric Neuropsychology at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC, and a professor at George Washington University School of Medicine. In 2003, he founded the Safe Concussion Outcome, Recovery & Education (SCORE) Program, the first pediatric concussion clinic in the United States. An active clinician who treats children, adolescents, and young adults with concussion, Dr. Gioia is also a supervisor/trainer of graduate and postdoctoral trainees and a researcher who has developed over a dozen innovative clinical measures used worldwide to define outcomes of various neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders.
For the past 20 years, Dr. Gioia has worked with the CDC on their “Heads Up” concussion educational toolkits and participated in their 2018 evidence-based systematic review and guideline development of pediatric mild traumatic brain injury. He leads the Medical Advisory Panel for USA Football and is on the Sport Science & Safety Committee of USA Lacrosse. He provides concussion management services and consultation to youth, high school, college teams as well as the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, NHL’s Washington Capitals, and Major League Rugby’s Old Glory DC team. He is a past president and fellow of the Sports Neuropsychology Society and a fellow of the APA Society of Clinical Neuropsychology. He is the 2025 recipient of the Sports Neuropsychology Society’s Harvey Levin Distinguished Career Award.
