Nathan Fishbein, MA

Volunteer PhD Student Research Assistant, AI, Risk, and Contemplative Science (ARC) Lab
Fordham University

Nathan Fishbein, MA, is a doctoral student in clinical psychology at Fordham University and a member of the AI, Risk, and Contemplative Science (ARC) Lab at the Child Mind Institute. Advised by Peggy Andover (Fordham University), his research focuses on AI safety and mental health, with an emphasis on how large language models respond to users experiencing suicidal ideation, self-injurious thoughts and behaviors, and acute psychological distress, as well as how people perceive and relate to AI systems in emotionally sensitive contexts.

Fishbein has clinical training in CBT, DBT, and psychodynamic psychotherapy and has worked with children, adults, and families across inpatient, outpatient, and community-based clinical settings. Prior to graduate school, he worked in the inpatient psychiatric unit at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he supported research on suicide and self-injurious thoughts and behaviors. His work aims to bring clinical psychology and suicide prevention expertise into the development and evaluation of AI systems, with the goal of improving safety for people who turn to these tools during moments of mental health crisis.
