Ron J. Steingard, MD

Ron J. Steingard, MD, is a former associate medical director and senior pediatric psychopharmacologist at the Child Mind Institute. With over 30 years of experience in the field, he is a nationally respected child and adolescent psychiatrist and researcher in pediatric psychopharmacology. He is an innovator in public health initiatives that have improved the availability of care for millions of children.

Dr. Steingard is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of children and teens with complex behavioral and psychiatric problems. The focus of his research has been on ADHD and depression in children, but he has also done extensive work with children and adolescents with bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorders, OCD and anxiety disorders.

Dr. Steingard joined the Child Mind Institute following a remarkable career in Massachusetts that had great impact on the field of child psychiatry in that state and across the nation. He developed the Pediatric Psychopharmacology Service at Children’s Hospital in Boston in the early 1990s, and has served as chief of child psychiatry at two academic medical centers.

During that time, he formed a long-lasting partnership with LADDERS, the integrated autism care clinic founded by Margaret Bauman, MD, an early leader in comprehensive, early interventions for autism and developmental disorders.

He later designed and implemented a pilot program that led to the Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Project (MCPAP), which dramatically increased the availability of care by forming networks of pediatricians and mental health professionals. MCPAP, which currently serves over 95 percent of children in the state, was recognized by the Kennedy School of Government as one of the leading innovations in government in 2011.

In addition to providing direct care to children and adolescents, Dr. Steingard has helped train a generation of child and adolescent psychiatrists and has published over 70 articles in the area of child psychiatry. Dr. Steingard currently serves as Professor of Psychiatry at University of Massachusetts Medical School and Executive Editor of the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology.
