Children Under Pressure: How to Nurture Healthy Kids in a Competitive World
Child Mind Institute 2019 Fall Luncheon Raised $900,000 to End the Stigma of Childhood Mental Health Disorders
Palo Alto, CA – The Child Mind Institute hosted its 2019 Fall Luncheon on Monday, September 16, which featured a panel discussion, “Children Under Pressure: How to Nurture Healthy Kids in a Competitive World.” The discussion was moderated by Elizabeth Vargas and featured Tanith Carey, author of Taming the Tiger Parent: How to Put Your Child’s Well-Being First in a Competitive World, and Mark Reinecke, PhD, ABPP, clinical director of the Child Mind Institute in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The panel discussed how parents can help children reach their full potential while still protecting their mental health and happiness in an increasingly competitive world.
Parents often times add pressure on their children to succeed to the standards of the outside world. “We want to help our children get ahead because we’re panicked by the global situation, and just want what is best for them,” said Tanith Carey. “But sometimes that backfires and parents need to know when to spot those signs.”
“There are three things to look out for when identifying adolescent anxiety which are severity, impact and duration,” said Dr. Reinecke. Adding that if the anxiousness and fear last for longer than a week then it is a concern and parents should seek help. “When the anxiety overtakes the child’s emotions it will begin to affect their relationship, grades and attendance.”
The luncheon Host Committee included Megan and Harris Barton, Cori and Tony Bates, Devon Briger, Lisa Domenico Brooke, Suzanne and J.T. Crandall, Abby Durban, Liz Laffont, Karen and Ronnie Lott, Andrea McTamaney, Linnea Roberts, Allison and Dan Rose, Jennifer Sills, Dianne Taube, Angelique Wilson and Abby Winkelried.
The Child Mind Institute is dedicated to public education and giving families and professionals accurate information about mental health and learning disorders through events like the luncheon.
