Hunter College Partners with the Child Mind Institute as Sponsor of the 2019 Rising Scientist Awards
Nominations Now Open for Outstanding High School Students; Winners Receive $2000 Scholarship, Recognition at On the Shoulders of Giants Scientific Symposium
New York, NY –The Child Mind Institute announced today that Hunter College will serve as the sponsor of the 2019 Rising Scientist Awards, which recognize rising Tri-State Area high school seniors who have demonstrated superior academic performance in science and extraordinary promise in research in the fields of mental health, neuroscience or biomedical engineering.
The five Rising Scientist Award winners will each receive a $2000 scholarship to be awarded at the Child Mind Institute’s On the Shoulders of Giants scientific symposium on October 15 at Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College. During the symposium, winners will have the opportunity to share their research with event attendees, who include world-class researchers and children’s mental health care experts, at a special poster session. In addition, winners will be invited to shadow a Child Mind Institute scientist for the day and to a special “lunch and learn” brain science session at the Child Mind Institute.
Nominations, which can be submitted here, are open through June 28. The winners will be notified in early September 2019.

The Rising Scientist Awards are given to five rising high school seniors who attend school in the New York tri-state area. To be eligible for the 2019 awards, nominees must be in the 11th grade during the 2018-2019 academic year. Nominations are submitted by a school faculty member or administrator and are limited to one nomination per school. The Rising Scientist Awards were created to not only recognize outstanding achievement in science, but to also nurture students’ love of science and encourage them to continue their research and study of the brain.
Now in its 8th year, the Child Mind Institute Rising Scientist Award is a recognized sign of pre-college student distinction. Past Rising Scientists have gone on to study at highly competitive schools. They have worked in prestigious laboratories at Mt. Sinai, Stony Brook, Weill Cornell Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and Rockefeller University, among others and have contributed to notable public organizations including the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Mental Health America and Doctors Without Borders.
The following criteria will be used when considering nominees:
Outstanding achievement and interest in mental health research, neuroscience or biomedical engineering, as evidenced by strong academic performance in science courses, participation in related extracurricular activities, and scientific research studies or independent research.
