Self-Esteem in the Age of Social Media

January 8, 2019

The Child Mind Institute had an important discussion on the pressures of adolescence in the era of cell phones, selfies and social media with the creative team behind the hit film, Eighth Grade.

Joining us was Elsie Fisher, who stars as eighth grader Kayla Day; Bo Burnham, the film’s writer and director; and from the Child Mind Institute, Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz and Dr. Jamie Howard. The discussion was moderated by Good Morning America’s Ginger Zee.

Eighth Grade has received critical acclaim and recognition for raising important issues about the risks to self-esteem and developing identity — already fragile in adolescence — in the image-obsessed 21st century. We are excited to use this film’s platform to discuss nurturing confidence and self-expression and helping our children handle the stresses of their wired adolescence.
