In a surprising new treatment for kids with anxiety, the therapist works only with the parents — not with the kids themselves. It’s called SPACE, and it’s based on the idea that when parents protect kids from things that make them anxious, they inadvertently reinforce that anxiety. SPACE trains parents not to come to the rescue when kids are anxious, but instead express confidence that the child can deal with it. This enables the child to build resilience, and their anxiety fades.

This week we explore how SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) works with parents. It has been shown to be just as effective as therapy in which the child participates directly. We also have tips for dealing with anxious headaches and stomachaches, separating from kids who are clingy, and recognizing when problem behavior is a sign of anxiety.
