Bridging the Gap

Carter’s Healthy Brain Network Journey

How access to a mental health and learning evaluation unlocked doors for Carter.

A Heartbreaking Realization

A Heartbreaking Realization

When Carter’s fourth grade teacher called his parents to tell them he was struggling in school — not finishing work, disrupting class, easily distracted — his mom and dad asked him what was going on.

His answer broke their hearts: “I’m there, my eyes are open, but it’s like I fell asleep and just woke up… I have no idea what the teacher was just talking about.”

No Time to Wait

No Time to Wait

Carter’s teacher thought there was something deeper behind his behavior, and she recommended getting a mental health and learning evaluation. But a reliable evaluation can be expensive, with a long waitlist. And Carter needed help now.

“Every family deserves to get the help they need.”

Increasing Access

Increasing Access

That’s how his family found the Child Mind Institute’s Healthy Brain Network. It’s a research study, so it’s free for families to participate — and it makes it possible for families like Carter’s to receive mental health evaluations and personalized reports that could cost up to $10,000 if obtained privately.

“The Healthy Brain Network is free to families, and that changes everything.”

– Kristin, Carter’s mom

Unlocking Opportunities

Unlocking Opportunities

Carter’s personalized report confirmed that he had ADHD. But it didn’t just give his family answers — it gave them the tools to get Carter the help he needed.

His school modified his education plan. His teacher made changes in his classroom. His pediatrician was able to prescribe him medication. And recently, Carter started start sixth grade at a new school specifically for kids with learning differences. That report from the Healthy Brain Network was the backup his parents needed to advocate for Carter, and it made all the difference.

“Things look a lot different — and a lot brighter — than two years ago when we got that first call from his teacher.”

– Kristin, Carter’s mom

About Your Donation

About the Child Mind Institute

Millions of children – as many as 1 in 5 – struggle with mental health or learning challenges. Fully 70% of U.S. counties do not have a single child and adolescent psychiatrist. Due to stigma, misinformation, and a lack of access to care, the average time between onset of symptoms and any treatment at all is over 8 years. Our children deserve better.

That’s why the Child Mind Institute was created.

We’re dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders by giving them the help they need. We’ve become the leading independent nonprofit in children’s mental health by providing gold-standard evidence-based care, delivering educational resources to millions of families each year, training educators in underserved communities, and developing tomorrow’s breakthrough treatments.

Together, we truly can transform children’s lives.
