Ashley Smith, MS, is a psychology extern in the Gund Learning and Diagnostic Center at the Child Mind Institute. She is currently pursuing her doctoral degree in the school psychology program at St. John’s University, where she also obtained her master’s degree in school psychology. Smith has also been actively involved in research throughout her doctoral training. She has assisted a team of investigators on a state-funded grant and co-lead virtual training sessions focused on adapting cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for youth with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Prior to joining the Child Mind Institute, Smith completed externships at Scarsdale Middle School and the St. John’s University Center for Psychological Services. There, she provided both evidence-based therapy and psychological testing services to children and adolescents. Smith also facilitated group social skills counseling, conducted initial and triennial psychological assessments, collaborated with teachers to address students’ behavioral and/or academic challenges, and presented evaluation results to parents and staff at Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings.

In her current role, Smith provides comprehensive neuropsychological and educational evaluations to help understand children and adolescents’ cognitive, academic, and psychosocial functioning. She integrates information from multiple sources to determine students’ current profiles and make targeted recommendations to support their growth and well-being.

Overall, Smith is dedicated to using her background in psychology to support children, adolescents, and their families through thoughtful, individualized assessments and evidence-based recommendations. She aims to tailor assessments to the needs of her clients, help them understand their strengths and weaknesses, and identify effective next steps toward achieving their goals.
