Caio Borba Casella, MD, PhD, is a clinical data analyst in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Global Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health at the Child Mind Institute. In this role, he contributes to international research on child and adolescent mental health by supporting data analysis and cross-cultural projects.

Dr. Casella completed his medical degree, psychiatry residency, and child and adolescent psychiatry residency in Brazil, at the University of São Paulo’s Institute of Psychiatry (IPq-HCFMUSP). He went on to earn his PhD in psychiatry at the same institution, where he presented his dissertation on emotional symptoms in children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. This included a randomized controlled trial testing a telemedicine intervention.

In addition to his academic career, Dr. Casella maintained a private clinical practice in São Paulo, treating children, adolescents, and adults. He also worked in consultation-liaison services as a clinician and supervisor of medical residents at the Hospital das Clínicas and the Infant Psychiatry Day Hospital. Additionally, Dr. Casella has experience in the humanitarian field, having served as a mental health consultant for SOS Children’s Villages — Syria and as a psychiatrist for Médecins Sans Frontières in the Central African Republic. In these roles, he focused on capacity building and care for populations affected by conflict.

In his current role at the Child Mind Institute, Dr. Casella aims to combine clinical expertise and global data analysis to better understand emotional symptoms and risk factors in young people, particularly in low-resource and crisis settings.
