Sara Guttentag, PsyD, is a clinical psychologist in the Mood Disorders Center at the Child Mind Institute. Licensed in both New York and New Jersey, Dr. Guttentag specializes in the evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents, and young adults with mood and anxiety disorders. She has extensive experience working with individuals presenting with depression, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), oppositional behaviors, as well as a wide range of other co-occurring psychiatric and neurodevelopmental conditions.
Dr. Guttentag is highly trained in evidence-based treatments, with expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). More specifically, she has received intensive training in DBT for children (DBT-C), DBT for adolescents (DBT-A), and DBT for young adults. Dr. Guttentag has provided individual, family, and group therapy across diverse settings, including medical centers, outpatient clinics, schools, and community mental health programs. Her clinical work emphasizes helping young people build practical skills in emotion regulation, distress tolerance, cognitive flexibility, and interpersonal effectiveness. She also works closely with parents, incorporating evidence-based approaches such as parent management training (PMT) to strengthen caregiver support and improve family functioning.
Using a collaborative, strengths-based approach, Dr. Guttentag tailors treatment to each child’s developmental needs and family context. She partners with caregivers, schools, and other providers to ensure coordinated care and to support meaningful, lasting change. Her work is grounded in fostering a warm, engaging therapeutic relationship while delivering structured, skills-based interventions that empower children and families to thrive.
