Scott M. Sokol, PhD, ABPd
Scott M. Sokol, PhD, ABPdN, is a board-certified pediatric neuropsychologist and senior neuropsychologist in the Gund Learning Diagnostic Center at the Child Mind Institute. With over thirty years of clinical and educational experience, he specializes in the assessment and diagnosis of cognitive, learning, and neurodevelopmental disorders in children, adolescents, and young adults. His areas of expertise include dyscalculia, dyslexia, dysgraphia, nonverbal learning disability (NVLD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and other neurocognitive conditions. He also has extensive experience in the differential diagnosis of psychiatric disorders that impact learning and cognition, including anxiety and mood disorders.
As a former head of school and professor of special education, Dr. Sokol is well-versed in special education law, policies, and procedures. He works closely with schools to ensure appropriate supports and accommodations for students through IEPs and 504 plans. And before joining the team at the Child Mind Institute, Dr. Sokol was the director of psychological assessment at Mount Sinai Morningside and West, and a professor of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine.
Dr. Sokol is a compassionate and highly skilled clinician who builds strong rapport with patients across developmental stages, fostering comfort and collaboration throughout the evaluation process. Trained as both a research scientist and clinician, he conceptualizes each assessment as a systematic exploration of an individual’s cognitive architecture, identifying distinctive strengths and vulnerabilities within the broader framework of neurodevelopmental functioning.
Dr. Sokol believes that psychological assessment serves not only diagnostic and educational purposes but also facilitates greater self-understanding. And when not engaged in his own clinical work, he enjoys mentoring clinicians.
