Targeting Transdiagnostic Overcontrol: Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT) for Adolescents

Friday, May 30, 2025 · 11:30 am - 1:00 pm ET
In Person & Online Events · $25

Kirsten Gilbert, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. Dr. Gilbert’s research examines the phenomenology, clinical characteristics, and longitudinal developmental course of the transdiagnostic mechanism of “too much self-control” from early childhood through adolescence.

About This Event

Dr. Gilbert will define the “overcontrolled” presentation and how it presents across various psychiatric presentations in children and adolescents. She will then introduce Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT), including principles, theory, and current research on this novel transdiagnostic treatment. Dr. Gilbert will then focus on ongoing efforts to adapt RO DBT for adolescents, including treatment allocation, practical considerations, and new skills.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the “overcontrolled” phenotype in children and adolescents.
  • Identify when to use RO DBT in adolescent psychiatric populations.
  • Apply RO DBT principles and structure for use with adolescents.
  • Integrate examples of RO DBT adolescent skills and theory in the context of RO DBT treatment.
