Traveling can be stressful for any kid, but those with autism, sensory issues, anxiety, or other mental health challenges often have a particularly difficult time. All that stimulation and unfamiliarity can make it hard for children to keep their cool and avoid meltdowns. But more and more airports, airlines, and hotels are offering options for kids who struggle with travel, and strategic planning can make things easier for the whole family.

This week on childmind.org, we’ve got new tips from experts, travel professionals, and experienced parents on making travel — by plane or by car — smoother for children. As we head into holiday gatherings, we also have ideas for making family events less stressful for kids (especially those with selective mutism) and hosting parties that children with sensory challenges can enjoy. Plus, tips for encouraging gratitude in kids, over the holidays and all year round.
