What is Mirror?

It offers a safe space for self-reflection through text, audio, and video journaling — with AI-powered insights, mood checks, and guided prompts.

How does Mirror help with mental health?

Mirror is specifically designed for youth mental health, incorporating principles of child development and psychology. It was developed with leading mental health experts and offers clinician-designed prompts and AI-powered insights to help teens build resilience and gain deeper insights into their emotions.

Who developed Mirror?

Mirror was developed by leading mental health experts at the Child Mind Institute in partnership with the California Child and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI).

How does Mirror keep teens safe?

When teens write an entry, Mirror’s system checks for patterns that may indicate thoughts of self-harm. It uses AI that is trained to recognize common signals without overstepping boundaries, and categorizes entries as follows:

  • No Concern: The entry reflects typical thoughts and feelings, both positive and negative.
  • Low Risk: The entry shows some signals of distress without immediate intent to act on those feelings, so Mirror might gently suggest helpful resources.
  • High Risk: If the entry includes stronger signals of possible self-harm or suicidal thoughts, summaries are blocked, and a safety card is shown with links to helpful resources.
