*If appropriate for your family, we are a training institute where families can work with supervised clinical externs at lower rates.

Do you accept insurance?

We are an out-of-network provider. We help families use out-of-network benefits by providing superbills for their insurance company. Additionally, we partner with two organizations to assist with filing, managing claims, verifying benefits, and handling pre-authorizations.

What conditions do you treat?

The Child Mind Institute offers thorough evaluation and gold-standard treatment for a wide range of mental health conditions and concerns. Please refer to our What We Treat section for our areas of care.

What is included in a diagnostic evaluation?

A diagnostic evaluation includes interviewing the child and their parents or guardians, either separately or together. We also gather information from the child’s teachers, previous therapists, and pediatricians. Using gold-standard diagnostic measures, we thoroughly assess symptoms and concerns. The evaluation typically takes between two and three hours to complete. Afterward, we provide comprehensive feedback and make treatment recommendations.

My child has already been evaluated. Do I need another evaluation?

Yes. While we value previous evaluations, our clinicians will conduct a direct assessment to ensure we provide personalized and effective treatment recommendations tailored to your child’s specific needs.

How long will my child need treatment?

The duration of treatment varies based on the diagnosis and severity of a child’s symptoms. We assess the level of care needed during the initial evaluation and adjust it as necessary throughout treatment. Our goal is to help your child improve and resume their normal activities, including school and spending time with friends.

What if my child needs treatment for several different learning, emotional and behavioral problems?

We create treatment teams and work with families to address all of a child’s mental health needs.

How long are follow-up appointments?

Follow-up appointments are usually 45-60 minutes. After the diagnostic evaluation is completed, clinicians consider a child’s symptoms to determine the appropriate length and frequency of sessions.

Do clinicians provide school and home visits?

Yes, when suitable, our clinicians conduct sessions in a child’s school and home environments as well as virtually.

Can I have my child evaluated at the Child Mind Institute and then look for treatment closer to home?

Absolutely. We often work with children who live outside New York City or San Mateo. Following the evaluation process, we may offer treatment sessions virtually, depending on what is best for your child and the laws in your state. We can also assist you in finding local specialists and collaborate with the clinicians currently involved in your child’s care.

Do clinicians evaluate and treat adults?

Our clinicians primarily evaluate and treat children, teens, and young adults up to 24 years old. However, parents and adult family members of our patients occasionally request care and we make every effort to accommodate their needs.
