ADHD and Behavior Disorders Center

School-Based Services

Problems in school are common for children and adolescents with ADHD and behavior disorders. School can be a challenging environment for some students, and progress made in office-based treatments does not always carry over to the school setting. We know that educators can provide invaluable support for children who are struggling, so our clinicians partner with educators to find strategies and tactics that work in the classroom — making the learning environment better for everyone.

Commonly provided school-based interventions include:

  • Observation and assessment of behavioral issues in the school setting
  • Consultation with school staff regarding implementation of interventions related to behavior, social skills, or anger management
  • Workshops with school staff on evidence-based strategies for behavior management and promoting improved academic functioning
  • Help with implementation of IEP behavior plans, daily report cards, and other classroom accommodations
  • Tailoring of individualized student behavior plans to maximize effectiveness
  • Live in-class coaching of school staff on implementation of strategies to reduce problematic behaviors and promote school success

Our clinicians also provide teacher training workshops in various settings around New York City, covering topics such as:

  • ADHD and Behavioral Issues at School: What to look for and when to seek help
  • School-Based Behavioral Interventions: How to be successful while preventing burnout
  • Effective Home-School Collaboration: Using therapeutic supports to foster student progress

Whether you’re an educator, a parent of a student, or a community volunteer, please feel free to contact the Child Mind Institute if you feel that we can help with mental health issues or academic support in your school. Our team will work with you to ensure that our interventions are both individualized to each child’s specific needs and consistent with school’s culture and philosophy. Our staff is also able to collaborate with learning specialists (at the Child Mind Institute and elsewhere) and school staff to help get kids educational testing, special services, or needed accommodations.
