Evidence-Based Autism Treatment

The Child Mind Institute’s Autism Center offers expert diagnosis and evidence-based treatment at our New York, NY and San Mateo, CA offices.

The Autism Center at the Child Mind Institute is an integrated clinical center and research lab dedicated to supporting toddlers, children, adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder and related challenges, including social (pragmatic) communication disorder.

Our clinical center for autism and related disorders specializes in diagnosing children and teens and providing them with effective, in-person evidence-based treatments.

Our research lab is focused on understanding the neurobiology of ASD using brain imaging and a range of other clinical and cognitive approaches.

Conditions We Treat

Our autism psychologists diagnose and treat the full range of autism and related disorders. The Autism Center offers a 360-degree approach to supporting patients of all ages with autism and their families.

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder
  • Conditions once called Asperger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)

Our services are indicated for children who struggle with:

  • Making friends and maintaining friendships
  • Understanding the perspective of someone else
  • Being flexible and open-minded
  • Managing big and complex emotions
  • Tolerating changes to preferred routines and preferences
  • Independently completing routines (morning and evening)

Medication & Psychiatrists

When medication may be helpful, our team works with board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrists at the Child Mind Institute or partners with your physician. Our psychiatrists offer expert consultation on whether or not medication can improve autism treatment outcomes. They also provide ongoing medication management when requested.

Additional Support

Our center for autism focuses on identifying and understanding your child’s symptoms and unique challenges. We carefully consider which treatment options may be of the most help.

However, sometimes children with autism spectrum disorder require support from a variety of professionals. We can help connect families to additional services in the community, including early intervention, vocational services, support groups, occupational therapy, and other providers.
