President Obama today signed the 21st Century Cures Act into law. In introductory remarks highlighting the cancer “moonshot” provisions in the bipartisan bill, Vice-President Biden reminded the audience that “politics can still come together to do big, consequential things for the American people.”

Among other sweeping changes, the bill expands funding for brain research (including on drug abuse and mental health) and restructures federal agencies that set mental health policy on a national level. Representative Tim Murphy sponsored mental health reform legislation, the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, that was included in the bill. He discussed the changes on a visit to the Child Mind Institute.
