Do you ever feel like your thoughts and feelings are a tangled mess? Adolescence is a time period with a lot of changes, and the ups and downs can make you feel like you’re on an emotional rollercoaster. Sometimes it’s hard to understand what you’re feeling, let alone why. Self-reflection — taking a step back to examine your inner world — is a powerful tool for navigating these challenges. Traditional journaling can be helpful, but it’s easy to miss patterns or feel stuck making sense of your emotions.

That’s where a new journaling app called Mirror, developed by the Child Mind Institute in partnership with the California Child and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI), comes in. It’s like having a thoughtful friend who can help you untangle those thoughts and feelings. Mirror uses the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to help you gain deeper insights into your emotional landscape, making the journey of self-discovery and self-reflection a little less daunting.

How Mirror Uses AI to Help You Process Your Thoughts

Mirror uses AI to enhance your personal reflection. Think of it as a supportive tool that adds another layer to your journaling practice. Here’s how it works:

Finding the threads

After you write an entry, Mirror’s AI uses natural language processing (NLP) to identify patterns, helping you notice things you might have missed. It can also recommend support in the moments you need it most.

Bringing structure to your thoughts

Sometimes, a journal entry can feel like a jumbled mess. Mirror’s AI-generated summaries organize your thoughts, making them easier to process. It’s like having someone neatly order your notes after a brainstorming session.

Encouraging deeper reflection

The AI-generated summary isn’t meant to tell you what to think. It’s designed to spark further analysis. Seeing your thoughts summarized can help you revisit your original entry with fresh eyes.

AI isn’t perfect; it may occasionally get things wrong. But you can think of it as a helpful starting point that offers new perspectives. The real work of understanding your emotions comes from you — with the support of adults or a mental health professional when you need it.

      Keeping Your Thoughts Private

We understand that privacy is important, especially when it comes to your personal thoughts and feelings. Here’s how Mirror protects your information:

      Your entries are private

Your journal entries are stored only on your device — your phone or computer. We never store them on our servers.

      Temporary processing for summaries

To create the summary, a temporary, encrypted copy of your entry is sent to our secure servers in the cloud. This is necessary because the AI needs more computing power than most phones have.

      Gone within minutes

This temporary copy is deleted from our servers immediately after the summary is created — usually within a minute or two. We do not keep any identifying information associated with the entries beyond what’s needed for the AI magic to happen.

No human eyes on journal entries

Using this technology means that no one at the Child Mind Institute will ever read your writing in Mirror. Your entries are processed and then deleted in moments.

      A bridge to connection

Your journal entries and summaries in Mirror are for your eyes only unless you decide to show them to someone else. You can share summaries or entries with parents, caregivers, or therapists, but only if you decide to. Taking a screenshot of your entry is an easy way to share it when and if you want to.

Mirror ensures that all personal information is handled with the highest standards of privacy and security, and is fully compliant with COPPA, SOC 2, and CCPA regulations.

Mirror offers a unique way to explore your inner world, providing valuable insights that can lead to more self-awareness and personal growth. Ready to start your journey of self-discovery?
