Overview

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), offered through the Mood Disorders Center, is a state-of-the-art, evidence-based form of cognitive behavioral therapy for children, teenagers and adults who experience significant trouble managing their emotions, thoughts and behaviors. This research-backed therapy is an excellent option for those who want a comprehensive treatment that teaches emotional, behavioral and cognitive skills.

Our DBT options are tailored by age group and are available at our New York and California offices.

DBT-C Skills Group

The DBT-C Skills Group is a comprehensive, evidence-based approach designed to help children ages 6 – 12 develop emotional and behavioral regulation through skill-building and family support.

Additional Information

The skills group begins with parent training, followed by weekly or twice-weekly family sessions. Families receive individualized support to build and practice coping skills with guidance from an experienced clinician.

Eligibility

Children ages 6 – 12 with trouble managing emotions can participate. The program is offered in-person at our New York office. Parent participation is recommended.

Mood Masters® (Preadolescent) Skills Group

Mood Masters® (Preadolescent) Skills Group

The Mood Masters® Skills Group is a comprehensive DBT-based intervention for children ages 8 – 13 and their parents, designed to help families manage strong emotions and behaviors through skill-building and collaborative support.

Additional Information

The skills group meets weekly for 28 weeks and includes phone coaching and optional parent management training. Families receive tailored support from experienced clinicians and learn in a structured, environment alongside peers. Medication management is available if needed.

Adolescent Multifamily Skills Group

Adolescent Multifamily Skills Group

The Adolescent Multifamily Skills Group  helps teens and their caregivers build stronger communication, coping strategies, and shared DBT skills for navigating challenges together.

Additional Information

This group meets weekly for 90 minutes and includes both teens and parents/caregivers. Families learn core DBT skills in a supportive group setting led by experienced clinicians.

Eligibility

Teens ages 13 – 18 with trouble managing emotions can participate. The program lasts at least 6 months and is offered in-person at our New York and California offices. Parent participation is recommended.

Young Adult Skills Group

Young Adult Skills Group

The Young Adult Skills Group supports individuals ages 18 – 25 in building DBT skills alongside peers facing similar challenges, with optional support for families.

Additional Information

This group meets weekly for 90 minutes and offers a collaborative space to practice core DBT skills. Separate parent consultation is available for those who want family involvement in their treatment process.

Young adults ages 18 – 25 with trouble managing emotions can participate. The program lasts at least 6 months and is offered in-person at our New York and California offices. Parent participation is recommended.

What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)?

The Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) at the Child Mind Institute includes a range of age-specific, evidence-based treatment options for children, adolescents, and young adults. Each skills group teaches core DBT skills—such as emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness—through structured group sessions and individual or family-based therapy. Skills group include DBT-C for children ages 6 – 12, Mood Masters for ages 8 – 13, the Adolescent Multifamily Skills Group for ages 13 – 18, and the Young Adult Skills Group for ages 18 – 25.

What is the cancellation policy?

If a child cannot attend and we are notified at least 7 days prior to the start date of the program we will issue a refund, excluding a $300 non-refundable deposit for administrative fees. At the time of registration full payment is required to reserve a space. If less than 7 days notification is given, no refund will be provided.

Can children outside of the New York metropolitan area join the program?

Yes. We welcome children and families from across the country and around the world. Our website has more information on how to get here and our recommended hotels close by our office.
